Xenia Nikolskaya

DUST

DUST: Past & Present

Xenia Nikolskaya (Russian/Swedish b.1973) is a visual artist and curator living between Cairo, Stockholm and St. Petersburg. Following in the footsteps of the earliest photographers to the Middle East Nikolskaya first visited Egypt in 2003 as a photographer working with a team of Russian archaeologists. In 2006 Nikolskaya returned to Egypt, this time using her camera to document a more recent past; the colonial architecture of the country. Over a period of five years that saw Nikolskaya travel from Alexandria in the North down to Esna in the South, Nikolskaya gained exceptional access to over thirty-five villas and abandoned buildings urgently capturing what remains of these now almost forgotten places.
