Mohamed Mahdy - Animals Family

Interested in the strange or peculiar and believing in his responsibility as a photographer to bear witness to what others may not see or overlook, Mahdy, in this series presents us with an intimate portrayal of a family that he came to know on his daily morning walks along the shores of Agamy, a town on the outskirts of Alexandria. Here a Cairene family is shown summering with a stable of work horses that they regard as important as any other member of their family. During the year the horses are used in weddings and festivities but for a few days each summer the whole ‘family’ retreats to the coast for a few carefree days of wild abandon. “I was struck by the way the men interacted with the horses. There was a great deal of tenderness and respect for them showing me an often unseen side of humanity in Egypt. I believe photography can inspire social change and that these images showing us this strong bond between man and animal will remind us of the importance of animal welfare and the joy that can bring us all.” Mohamed Mahdy
