René Clement - Transformer, 2020

Some of the earliest photographs ever made were of plants and flowers. William Henry Fox Talbot, the founder of modern photography, believed that one of the principle missions of this new medium was to render faithfully the tiniest details that could be found in nature. In Transformer, Clement not only shows us the intricate beauty of each botanical specimen, but through layering and manipulation of the original negative creates a hybrid that takes on an ambiguous, creature like character.
